Chapter Six

I reached into my pocket, grabbing a handful of red rose petals. I threw them into the dark water and watched as the petals and Lucy’s body slowly drifted further out to sea.

With a touch of luck, her body would never be discovered. And even if it was, after the creatures of the sea had their fill, I doubted much would remain.

She deserved nothing less.

The lack of compassion was part of my vampiric nature–one of the many aspects I found distasteful, but necessary sometimes.

I closed my eyes, serenity washing over me as I felt Lucy’s lifeblood coursing through my own veins, energising me. I never grew tired of the sensation, but never before had I killed to sustain my thirst. Others of my kind weren’t so thoughtful, or adept at hiding their crimes.

For many years, the Vampyre Council had covered up countless human murders, delivering swift and absolute justice to offenders who dare break the covenant signed a thousand years before to protect our kind.

There were other supernatural beings in this world, but we kept ourselves strictly isolated. Fraternising was the worst crime of all. The lure of witches was a powerful one, but I knew when to leave well alone.

Every vampire in existence was expected to know his or her history, and I was nothing, if not a quick study.

I knew of only one vampire whose existence defied our sacred laws, and that was Sienna Balanza, my own sire.

Born of a Scottish witch and a Spanish father, she was as powerful as any, descending from a Scottish clan of seers.

She was deemed too powerful, and therefore a threat to our own existence. The Vampyre Council took steps to ensure she was cowed. Her family were kidnapped, and for their safe return, Sienna agreed to be turned by our illustrious Prime Minister, Zahir Mohombi.

I thought back to Sienna’s confession, that she had retained some of her witch magic. It might come in handy during the days ahead.
